Big Lunch

Wormley and Turnford Big Lunch Event 2019

The Wormley and Turnford Big Lunch 2019 was a fantastic success!

In June, communities across the UK organise picnics and parties to mark the Eden Project's simple principle of encouraging local neighbourhoods to get together.

On Saturday 22 June, Wormley and Turnford Big Local residents were invited for a summer lunch event with great entertainment, food and an opportunity to meet & chat with their neighbours.

The aim is to get as many people as possible across the UK to join with their neighbours for a few hours of community spirit, friendship and fun.

What did we do? We have been: fencing, singing, storytelling, playing football, table tennis, steel drums, drawing, painting, eating food and simply having a lot of fun. There were almost 400 people in attendance.

Our collaboration with local agencies has been developed further and we were delighted that our partners also took part in our annual Get Together. They included: High Tree Children Centre, Lowewood Museum, Broxbourne Youth Council, Fencing Club, HAFLS, Broxbourne Fairtrade Group and many more! We were also pleased to see our Local Cllrs popping in: Cllr Lewis Cocking, Leader of the Broxbourne Council, Cllr David Taylor, Deputy Mayor of Broxbourne and Cllr Gordon Nicholson.

However, one of the most important elements of our annual event is possibly not what was happening at the Community Centre or outside. These kind of events help hugely to build a stronger communities and enhance sense of belonging. Hundreds, if not thousands conversation took place during the day and we hope that they will encourage people to continue creating an environment in which each resident feels empowered, nourished and fulfilled.

The Big Lunch Event is a great example of a community initiative which break downs barriers, open up possibilities for social change and helps to boost people’s self-esteem and confidence. The journey of Wormley and Big Local continues and we are certain that the project will demonstrate that creating long lasting legacy is possible and we all want to be part of it.
