Wormley and Turnford is one of 150 Big Local Areas around the country receiving funding over ten years to create positive, lasting changes to the area. Groups, organisations and everyone living or working in the Wormley and Turnford Area are part of the project and can play a role in its development. Local people decide how the money is spent: Wormley and Turnford Big Local (WTBL) is guided by a partnership of volunteer residents who consult with the wider community to identify and prioritise local needs. The WTBL vision is to transform Wormley and Turnford into a place where people are proud to live, which nurtures aspirations, opportunities and a strong, sustainable community.
In the 6 months or so, and in particular since our move to Wormley and Turnford Big Local Hub, the project has run number of art related projects which have already helped us to reach out to many more residents and enhanced our ability to engage with the local community. It is very clear that our projects create a vehicle for a positive social change.
Over the summer, in partnership with the Broxbourne Council, we launched Art & Wellbeing summer project at Wormley and Turnford Big Local Hub. All four sessions’ were attended by 20 young residents who networked, took part in vision board making exercise or were being asked to create a self-portrait which best describe their emotions & state of mind. All attended are also working on our fantastic Community Tree.
A local resident, Alison McWhinnie, has joined WTBL in August as a Community Artist. Alison is a qualified Art Therapist who was keen to create an innovative space for community cohesion and learning. Our WTBL Art Project had a great start with around 7 residents attending our weekly sessions. The project has already attracted number of individuals from the area and all participants had a lovely opportunity to produce some wonderful items! The Art Project is now attended, on weekly basis, by at least 5-8 local residents.
In September, we also started a Sewing Club which is led by a local resident, Seema. Our hub has just become ‘fashion corner of Wormley & Turnford’. This project demonstrates a wonderful way to empower resident and bring together the local community.
Only a month ago, WTBL completed, a very well attended serious of 4 workshops, over October half-term term. Each session was led by a different artist and we were able to welcome 53 residents into the hub (children, parents and grandparents). WTBL hub has become a centre of community activism and during that week, we ran: Spider-Web and Lantern workshop, Pumpkin Painting session, Upcycle, Keyrings and Jewellery workshop.
After a very successful Half-Term activities, we are delighted that WTBL is running another serious of art workshops for Wormley and Turnford residents. The Art Explores is an inspiring and engaging education programme which nurtures creativity and empower young minds. This project is aimed primarily at Primary School children (ages: 6 – 11 years old). We started on Wednesday, 13 November (3:45 pm - 4:45 pm) and the last session will be delivered on 18 December.
Do get in touch if you want to find out more. We hope to continue all our art projects in January!
