The Big Lunch

Wormley and Turnford Big Lunch 2019

On Saturday 22 June, Wormley and Turnford residents were invited for a summer lunch event with great entertainment, food and an opportunity to meet and chat with their neighbours. The Big Lunch was one of many picnics and parties organised across the UK, originating from the Eden Project's simple principle of encouraging local neighbourhoods to get together for a few hours of community spirit, friendship and fun.

It was a sunny afternoon and doubtlessly that helped to encourage the crowd of around four hundred local people to come along. It was great to have the support of so many local organisations, including High Trees Children Centre, Lowewood Museum, Broxbourne Blades Fencing Club, HAFLS, and Broxbourne Fairtrade Group. Many of them set up displays or activities so that there was plenty to see and do, from fencing, singing and storytelling; playing football, table tennis – or steel drums; to drawing, painting and of course eating food!

Among the people enjoying the day were our Local Councillors; Cllr Lewis Cocking, Leader of the Broxbourne Council, Cllr David Taylor, Deputy Mayor of Broxbourne and Cllr Gordon Nicholson all popped in. Several members of the Broxbourne Youth Council were also in attendance and provided some interesting information about their role in representing local views.

However, the most important aspect of the day was the way in which it strengthened and nourished our community. Hundreds, if not thousands, of conversations mixed into the happy buzz as neighbours built connections and new relationships which will continue to flourish in the future.  Wormley and Turnford Big Lunch 2019 was a fantastic success, another step on the journey of the Big Local project, and more evidence that creating long lasting legacy is possible and we all want to be part of it!
